5 Signs Your Child May Need a Reading Tutor

5 Signs Your Child May Need a Reading Tutor

Is your child falling behind in reading? You’re not alone.

A lot of parents notice something feels off before a report card even arrives. Maybe your child avoids books. Maybe they guess at words or get overwhelmed during homework. These can all be early signs that your child needs reading support.

Getting help early can make a big difference.

At Fox Tutoring Academy, we work with K to 5 students to help them feel confident, read with ease, and enjoy books again. If you’re wondering whether tutoring might help your child, here are five signs to look for.

1. Your Child Avoids Reading

If reading time always turns into an argument or your child flat out says they hate books, it may not be about the books at all.

Avoidance often means reading feels hard or embarrassing. Some kids would rather avoid the challenge than admit they’re struggling.

What you can do: Ask your child gently what they find tricky. Keep it relaxed and curious instead of turning it into a big talk.

2. They Struggle to Sound Out Words

If your child guesses at words or skips over them, there may be gaps in their phonics skills.

Sounding out words or decoding is a key skill that starts early and sets the stage for all future reading. When this part doesn’t click, everything else becomes harder.

This is one area where tutoring can help quickly and effectively.

3. Reading Is Extremely Slow

Some kids read word by word and pause often. Others lose their place or forget what they just read. When reading is slow and effortful, it can be frustrating for everyone.

Fluency isn’t about reading fast. It’s about reading smoothly enough to enjoy and understand the story.

At Fox Tutoring Academy, we use re-reading games and fluency-building techniques that help kids practice without pressure.

4. They Can’t Retell What They Just Read

If your child reads a passage but can’t explain what happened, it may be a sign of comprehension challenges.

This tends to show up more in second through fifth grade when kids are asked to summarize or make predictions.

Tutoring can help your child learn how to think through a story not just read the words. We teach strategies that get kids actively engaged before, during, and after reading.

5. Their Confidence Is Slipping

Not every child will say “I’m bad at reading,” but you might notice other signs.

They avoid schoolwork. They give up quickly. They compare themselves to classmates. Reading struggles can chip away at self-esteem over time.

One-on-one tutoring gives kids a space to try, make mistakes, and succeed—without feeling judged. Bit by bit, their confidence comes back.

Final Thoughts

If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s okay to trust your gut.  Reading struggles are common, and the earlier you catch them, the easier they are to work through. A reading tutor can help fill in the gaps, build new skills, and help your child feel good about reading again.

You know your child best. If you feel they need support, chances are they do.

Many schools use reading screeners a few times a year to determine whether students are at High Risk, Moderate Risk, or On Grade Level.

  • Children flagged as High Risk may need a formal Student Reading Plan.
  • Students identified as Moderate Risk often benefit from targeted instruction to build foundational reading skills before bigger gaps form.

If your child has recently been placed in one of these bands or if you’ve just had a teacher mention it in passing it can feel overwhelming. That’s where we come in.

At Fox Tutoring Academy, we specialize in supporting students in the High and Moderate Risk ranges. We take school data seriously, and we build personalized tutoring sessions around what your child actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all program.

We’ll help your child feel seen, supported, and successful.
